A steady flow of e-mails is universal and something most university employees know all too well. An efficient intra-web can be a useful ally, as by moving material from mailing lists into an intra-web the flow of information becomes more focused. On the University of Iceland’s intranet all content can be, and is, categorized by target groups and employees can filter out material suitable for them.

Ugla intranet for staff was re-designed in the beginning of 2013 as an important information forum for all U staff. Employees get information and data useful in everyday work; receive announcements on events and courses on offer as well as news on University matters. Ugla intra-web has three main functions for employees; storing information on University operations, access to programmes, and communication of information.

The biggest challenge facing internal communication is to lure employees onto the intranet on a regular basis, making the visit an integral part of the working day. This is a gradual process that requires patience, constant feed of information, and humour! The fun factor of intra-webs should thus not be ignored.
